A Ball Game

The very first game on the website. This game uses the core mechanics of the basic Unity tutorial 'Roll-a-Ball' combined with gameplay loosely based on the Scratch game of the same name created by Ian Curry. Roll around a maze and collect all 12 cubes to win.

Players roll around the map using WASD, but unlike other games, the controls actually accelerate the player in a given direction, rather than changing their velocity directly. Each cube increases the player's acceleration.

A Ball Game is actually a modified version of the Unity basic 'Roll-a-Ball' tutorial, with minor features added as an extra challenge before moving on to other projects. The maze was added to make the game more interesting, and colors were added to the player and world objects to add contrast.
Many of the game's mechanics are based off of a Scratch game of the same name by Ian Curry. In the game, two players competed to deplete a flying red ball's health (by touching it). Players moved around a small map and collected small blue objects to increase their speed, much like in the Unity version. The last player to touch the red ball and kill it won the game.

  • The game actually uses a script to change the color of objects, as Materials (used to texture/color objects) had never been heard of at the time.
  • As a secret feature in the original, players can press C to switch to a top-down camera that shows the entire maze. Players can even control the player from this perspective, making the game much easier.
  • A 3D platformer version of the game was attempted, using the same controls and mechanics as the maze version. However, the game was scrapped due to difficulties with camera controls and weird movement controls.
  • A 2D side-scrolling version of the game was ported to mobile devices as an experiment with iPhone controls (in fact, the FIRST iPhone Unity game from the website). The game even featured a functional high-score system based on fastest time, a system that would be replicated in nearly every subsequent game up until Game Creator in January, including Space Shooter, Target Practice, and even Block Bomb Survival.
  • A relatively well-known glitch (that is completely useless) can be exposed at the end of the game. Once the player has collected all 12 cubes and the 'YOU WIN' text appears on the screen, the player can speed up from the far left edge of the maze all the way to the right. With this much speed, the player can actually phase through the wall. The player can also use this to escape the map, but this achieves nothing.
