Asteroid Escape
Fullscreen

Based on Jack Southard's popular 'Sleigh-stroids' game created in LittleBig Planet 3, Asteroid Escape offers an extreme challenge for those who are extremely bored. Featuring a simple concept and simpler controls, this frustratingly unfair game that is only for the truly determined.

Players control a small cube with a grappling hook, which attaches to the nearest escape pod and rockets them in the direction the pod is facing. When the player lets go, their momentum is preserved, allowing them to swing across the level. Players must dodge flaming asteroids and avoid the deadly top and bottom of the screen to survive. In addition, hitting an asteroid (while health is full) will cause the player to bounce with incredible force.

Asteroid Escape was originally developed as a mobile port of 'Sleigh-stroids'. However, in order to make the game more unique, the 'Sleigh-stroid Cruiser' (the vehicle used in the original LittleBig Planet level) was removed and replaced by an exaggerated version of the escape pod mechanic. The asteroid artwork mimics the flame effect in LittleBig Planet, and even the music is identical to the music that plays in Sleigh-stroids.
The game was designed to be endless, but to save time and focus on more important games (such as Swipe & Shoot), the endless map generator was replaced by a pre-designed, finite map. Technically, the highest possible score is 500, but no players have even gotten close to this.

  • The music is 'Whoever Brings the Night (Instrumental)' by Nightwish from LittleBig Planet 2, identical to the music featured in the actual level.
  • The character featured in the game was unofficially named 'Squealer' by Narayan Bal, due to the high-pitched Wilhelm scream the character makes when it dies.
  • The 'asteroid hit' sound effect is borrowed directly from Swipe & Shoot's 'enemy hit' sound effect.
  • Asteroid Escape is the one of the only games on the website that features Unity's 2D joint physics: in the grappling hook used by the player. The only other game to feature this type of physics is Tower Builder.
  • The escape pods were originally yellow, much like the spongey texture from the original LittleBig Planet level. The art wasn't good enough, however, and it ended up looking like cheese.
  • The original LittleBig Planet level, 'Sleigh-stroids' was created as a sort of rival to Rexford Jew's 'Ramp of Deadly Fun'. The level used the game's grappling hook powerup to power a 'Sleigh-stroids Cruiser', which was a green parallelogram with rockets attached to the bottom and back to propel the player through the asteroid field.
