Astrominer
Fullscreen

As an Astrominer in the distance future, you must travel the galaxy and collect valuable crystals from alien-infested tunnels. Use your weapon to shoot enemies and propel yourself through the low gravity environment, and be careful not to run out of oxygen!

Use the mouse to click in the direction you want to shoot, and use your gun's knockback to help control your descent. As you journey down, avoid dangerous spiky asteroids and enemy alien creatures. Collect crystals to use in the shop, but you must return back to your ship in order to save them. At the bottom of every cave is a treasure, which will net even more profit if you can make it back out.

You must also manage your oxygen throughout the descent. Oxygen depletes naturally as you progress, but it will drain faster if you get hit. In order to recover, you must patch the breach in your suit by clicking the 'Patch Breach' button that appears on the screen. Once you run out of oxygen, you die and lose your profits.

This game was developed late in 2018 as an experimental mobile game. It was primarily based around its unique physics, combined with the Jack's discovery that normal maps could be applied to sprites, thus allowing them to be illuminated using dynamic lighting. This overall dark theme ultimately inspired the cave exploration mechanics, until Astrominer was finally completed later that year. The game was not released until much later, however, as the project died out unceremoniously due to college applications. Afterwards, the project was left forgotten in favor of VR projects.

  • Originally, the game was going to be titled 'Astroblast', but this was changed in order to make the object of the game more clear.
  • Some of the enemies were inspired by the famous movie 'Aliens', especially the eggs.
  • The eggs were originally meant to release a unique type of alien that was far deadlier than any other, but this was ultimately forgotten by the end of development.
  • This game featured one of the most well-structured UI systems to date, since the animated menus were resizable and able to used for almost any screen.
  • Astrominer is one of the only games on the website to feature an actual tutorial level.
  • A VR version was created in early 2019, but the project was scrapped after only a few hours of development.
