The Hangout

Join dozens of online players in a live 3D chat room!

Players can roam around freely using W to move forward, S to walk backgrounds, A and D to turn left and right, and Q and E to move side to side. Players can also chat using the text box, using ENTER to send messages.

The Hangout was originally developed as a last resort for communication during production of Multiplayer Madness, as Joseph accidentally joined during a test game and was attempting to communicate by arranging Multiplayer Madness characters into letters, eventually resorting to a quick chat room for future incidents using Photon's premade chat room. The game was created in approximately half an hour (according to Joseph), though it took weeks to add the sound clip as heard from the game (there were over 6 versions of The Hangout as a result of this difficult issue). Other potential activities (such as racing and other games) were considered for The Hangout, but focus was slowly shifted to Laser Tag over the course of the following weeks.
Despite not being a "game", however, The Hangout became one of the most actively used games on the website due to its easy-to-access and private chat environment. Throughout 2015, The Hangout was used instead of texting as Joseph's phone was unable to respond to texts as quickly as other smartphones. Regular Hangout sessions were scheduled for every other Saturday starting at about 8:00PM, during which Joseph and Nathan would discuss game ideas, current events, and school. Occasionally, they would switch to Google Docs for further chatting. The Hangout met its end when Joseph received a new phone, and has since become somewhat of a relic of the past.

  • The Hangout actually went through several versions on the website, despite there being very little visible change to the game itself. The Hangout's version history includes v0.1, v0.2, v0.3, v0.31, v0.32, v0.33, and v0.37. The multiple v0.3s were a result of many failed attempts to add the now iconic of sound played when sending and receiving messages.
  • In the original version of The Hangout, players were named 'User 1', 'User 2', and so on. However, in the latest version of The Hangout, the players are named 'player 1', 'player 2', and so on.
  • Jack Southard joined in on The Hangout once, with Joseph present as well. This was one of their first and only encounters.
  • A common trick used in chats was adding an exta tab to pretend to be another person. This trick was often used to mimic the personality of fellow classmate Ian Curry, who was often invited to chats but never showed up.
  • Overuse of this trick during one chat may have possibly led to the creation of the mysterious 'player 5', who stood mysteriously at the spawn point despite no other tabs being open. The player remained there for the entirety of the conversation, though it never spoke.
  • The character used in the game is Robot Kyle, a free character from the Unity Asset Store.
  • The webpage background (on the original page) was changed to black in later versions to match the game's atmosphere.
  • For a short period of time, The Hangout was more popular than Multiplayer Madness due to its more interactive multiplayer experience and Multiplayer Madness' lack of content.
  • The Hangout is the only game on the website to feature chatting of any kind, despite Multiplayer Madness planning to have this feature.
  • Several reboots of The Hangout were planned, but never completed.
  • The Hangout is the only one of Joseph's games not to feature music.
  • The Hangout has been officially shortened to 'HNGO', and even 'H' (e.g. "Wanna HNGO?", "H?").
