ular multiplayer sensation on the website! This game features real-time top-down online combat with dozens of other players at a time. With 9 maps, 6 weapons, and a slight unpredictable lag, this game has enough instant action to keep the madness going anytime, anywhere.
Players control a circular character using WASD or the ARROW keys, and use the mouse to rotate and shoot. Player movement is not affected by rotation. Players are given a random weapon with every respawn, but they all look identical and have the same controls: click to shoot. Kills and deaths are recorded on a scoreboard on the top left, with notifications regarding recent kills and new players appear below that.
If a player gets five kills without dying, they will gain a killstreak, which refills and doubles their health and greatly improves their weapon.
Multiplayer Madness has also become notorious for having game-breaking glitches and almost unbearable lag issues. Players can often phase through bullets and seemingly teleport around the map, making them nearly impossible to hit. These glitches have become so prominent that nowadays they are a crucial component to the experience. This partially explained the "madness" in the game's title, as the game was both ridiculous to play and brought anger to players.
There are six weapons included in the game. The pistol shoots every 0.5 seconds for 50 damage per hit. The machine gun shoots every 0.2 seconds for 20 damage per hit. The shotgun shoots three bullets every 0.75 seconds for 30 damage per bullet hit. The rocket launcher shoots a slower-moving rocket every 1 second with low damage on contact but repeated damage to players in the explosion radius. The ricochet gun shoots an expanding, bouncing bullet that does damage relative to its size. And finally, the mine gun shoots mines that stick to walls and explodes when players approach.
Multiplayer Madness was developed in late January as the first attempt at creating an online multiplayer game on the website. Using a tutorial for a first person shooter by YouTuber 'quill18creates', Multiplayer Madness was created in days but developed and refined for months. In order to compensate for this length development period, a demo version with the latest changes was updated on the website every few days, allowing players to test out new features and provide feedback. Most versions had only minor tweaks, but major updates were more strongly advertised.
v0.1 was the first version released, and it quickly became a hit despite having no shooting or fighting mechanics whatsoever. By v0.3, however, fighting was added with some temporary coloring and map design, and it was at this version that the game began to build up its reputation. Later updates added more minor but necessary changes, such as sound effects and team colors.
The first major update came in v0.7, when the game also received its own page on the website for updates. The update included new maps, a temporary personal kill/death counter, messages, and usernames. Minor fixes continued into March, including a health bar and a new weapon: the infamous 'Laser'. Over time the laser was nerfed and eventually removed, and was instead replaced by the much less popular mine launcher and ricochet guns.
On March 5th, another major update was planned, but was delayed due to time constraints involving other school-related projects. Instead, a partial updated was released, including a functioning scoreboard and killstreak bonuses. When the full update did come out the following week, the major remaining bugs were fixed and formatting issues were somewhat resolved.
