Ultimate Survival

A futuristic 2D platformer based off of the Scratch game of the same name. Explore the universe (or in this case, the space station) as you shoot your way through hordes of "Bogeys" to survive...ultimately.

The game features standard side-scroller platforming mechanics and controls (as displayed behind the player), as well as a jetpack that can be used to jump higher and farther. However, it has limited fuel which recharges only while the player is on the ground. The player also has a laser machine gun known as the 'LaserBlaster', which has constantly recharging ammo. Players can click to shoot enemies and point cubes scattered throughout the level.

Ultimate Survival was designed as a continuation of the previous Scratch game of the same name. The original plan for the game featured several side-scrolling levels with interplanetary combat reminiscent of Space Shooter between major zones/planets. Players had access to a massive arsenal of weapons (similar to the Ratchet and Clank series), ranging from laser guns to flame throwers to guns that shot lightning bolts. However, the game went through a relatively short development period, although each new version was released to the website.
v0.1 featured fully functional movement controls, including the walking, jumping and jetpack physics featured in the final game. The map was made entirely of generic platforms (unlike the ones featured in the current version), including a ramp and stairs to test the player's ability to traverse these types of obstacles. In addition, the parallax effect on the stars was added in order to make the game feel more interesting and three-dimensional, a style that would be implemented in nearly every subsequent 2D game on the website.
v0.2 featured the same map, but with additional platforms added to the right. Shooting was also added, and enemies on the right (similar to the stationary enemies in the most recent version) had functional health. The music featured in the final version was added in this update, and the background was slightly tinted blue (as seen in the final version).
v0.3 was very similar to v0.2, but also included the moving variety of Bogey and the UI at the top of the screen. The health bar, jetpack fuel bar, ammo and point displays were all added in this version.
v0.4 was the last released version, which featured a completely redesigned map. It featured a large space station with sci-fi platforms and boxes, and was planned to be the tutorial level for the full game. The shooting Bogeys were added as well, as well as point cubes and deadly electricity. The camera was also zoomed in slightly.
One of the only aspects of the game that is praised is the relatively clean artwork. All art was based off of the original Scratch game, with some minor exceptions. In addition, a pixelated design was used in order to make the game more old-school. The 'access stations' used to teleport the player in the Scratch game made a return in the background, and the LaserBlaster used by the player was greatly improved.
During production of Ultimate Survival on Scratch (and later games in that year), 'battle cards' were drawn to show the lore and backstory of the game. Canonically, CSBrawl (on Scratch) is the first game in the 'Bogeytown Trilogy', set in a fictional city called Bogeytown (drawn the previous year), where the Class of 2015 lived. An image from Bogeytown can be seen on the main menu screen of the Scratch version of the game. After brawling for years, an alien invasion lasting around 5 days wiped out nearly the entire population in an event known as the Battle of Bogeytown, as depicted by the vairous battle cards. Ultimate Survival takes place nearly 50 years after the massacre. The game stars an unnamed character and his attempt to wipe out the remaining Bogeys in Bogeytown, and in various other locations.

  • One of the most noticeably broken features in the game is player health. While health still depletes properly, it can reach points lower than zero, causing the bar to continue left outside of the health bar. This is one of the most well-known examples of the game's unfinished-ness.
  • The music featured in the game is 'Fortress' from the Halo Reach OST, and was meant to be temporary.
  • Nastonaut JoLo appears in every version of the game, although he is impossible to reach in v0.4. In the v0.1, he is clearly visible in the background near the first platform. In v0.2 and v0.3, however, he is above the map, and players must tap the jetpack button repeatedly in order to see him.
  • The space station is based off of the space station featured in the original Scratch game, though much larger. This space station shape would appear in almost every future space-themed game on the website.
  • The gun and player sprites were created on separate spritesheets, which was done so that the player animations could be kept the same while weapons could be switched out.
  • In the most recent update of Ultimate Survival, the first boxes the player encounters have experimental low gravity, allowing players to push and even carry them to the "end" of the level.
  • The game was somewhat inspired by the success of rival platformer Joseph 4 President, which was created around the same time period to great success.
  • The idle animation is the same length as the walking animation (10 frames).
  • Ultimate Survival was the first game on the website to feature 2D sprites and physics.
  • Ultimate Survival uses the 'Cyberspace' font by Purdy Design, just like Hunt the Ian.
  • Other weapons that were planned for the game included a lightning gun (shot lightning bolts), a laser sniper known as the 'B.E.A.M', and an ultimate unnamed weapon capable of shooting hundreds of extremely powerful homing shots. Each of these weapons was sketched and pre-designed with damage, rate of fire, max ammo, and range fully planned. However, these other weapons never made it into the game.
  • The character's official name is 'SpaceDude'.
