Ultimate Survival: Endless
Fullscreen

In this recent spin-off of the original Ultimate Survival games, run and gun your way through the alien-infested space station as you collect points based on distance and enemies killed. This unfinished demo features basic slowed-down endless-runner style gameplay with some assets heavily inspired by the originals.

Ultimate Survival: Endless has very few controls, with player input focusing on jumping and shooting using the SPACE bar and clicking respectively. These controls were taken directly from the original Ultimate Survival 2D game on the website. Jumping is used to navigate over boxes and the button can be held to activate the player's jetpack. Shooting can be used to kill enemies and destroy boxes, and the weapon can be held for repeated damage. In addition, the D key can be used to dash forward, which can be used to quickly dodge enemies that may hit on the player, as the player's speed is constant otherwise.
However, these abilities cannot be used infinitely, as each has a limited energy before recharging. Jetpack fuel is consumed by jumping or dashing, but recharges while the player is on the ground. Ammo is consumed by shooting, but recharges constantly, even while shooting. These mechanics were also both present in the original Ultimate Survival 2D game.
Players die instantly when they hit enemies or even boxes.

The original plan for Ultimate Survival: Endless was to feature an environment that the player could freely move about (horizontally), despite still being endless. Players would walk towards the end of each "zone", where they would fight some sort of boss before being able to travel to the next area and repeat the process. New weapons could also be found through exploring, and 3 could be used in each level. However, this idea was scrapped, as no interesting enemies could be thought up without the game getting too repetitive. In addition, the game was developed towards the end of summer, and development was cut short in order to work on summar homework.

  • The switch to a semi-3D environment was also added to accentuate the player's forward motion and to give the player a better sense of what was ahead (in addition to making a more immersive world). Many other games use this same technique, where 2D sprites and physics are used with a 3D (perspective) camera to show depth.
  • Ultimate Survival: Endless was the first of many games to feature a main menu that was not in a separate scene (i.e. did not have to be loaded separately from the regular game), excluding the unreleased Space Shooter (where the main menu had to be reloaded each time as well). This feature, though simple and relatively uninteresting, was repeated in almost all subsequent games, including Asteroid Escape, Replay, Rocket Madness, and Rival.
  • The green bouncing Bogeys are somewhat based off of the bullies from Joseph 4 President, much like the Myosh from CSB Hunter.
  • Many of the sound effects in the game are borrowed from previous Ultimate Survival games, including the Wilhelm scream for the player and enemies' deaths, and the shooting sound effect.
  • The jetpack in Ultimate Survival: Endless behaves much more realistically than in previous versions of the game, where it accelerates the player vertically, rather than simply setting their velocity directly. In addition, the player's velocity is set to zero as soon as the player hits the ceiling, which prevents the "stuck to the ceiling" mechanic found in games such as Block Bomb Survival. In addition, as an overcompensation for "hovering" using the jetpack, jetpack fuel also loses extra initial fuel with each press of the jetpack or dash button.
  • The color sets featured in the original Scratch version of the game are actually implemented in the game (though they are unused). For this reason, the default player sprite is actually completely white (with the exception of the player's shoes and gloves which are black, and the player's skin which is skin-colored), and is set to the appropriate color when the game loads.
  • An unused background decoration includes the targets from Target Practice, which may have been used as additional "enemies" to shoot at, much like CSB Hunter. This was removed in the final game.
  • Only one of the player's shoes has a jet, as the shoes directly overlap in the jumping and flying animations.
  • The dashing ability was added very late in development in an attempt to make an escape for players who couldn't shoot enemies in time.
  • Ultimate Survival: Endless actually uses a more versatile animator by controlling the legs and arms separately. This allows the same walking animation to be applied to various arm positions (e.g. for different weapons).
  • The music slowing down after death was a last-minute addition, but the reasoning behind it is unknown.
